How to Manage Ostomy Odors

An ostomate can better understand the trouble of odor and gas. This could be a quite embarrassing situation for the patients, especially in a public place or gathering. Well, after the stoma, a person has to follow a new lifestyle, you should welcome a few changes in your routine. Some of these are necessary for happy ostomy life and avoid odor or any type of awkward situation. This would be the biggest challenge for patients. However, by the time, it seems everything easy and normal to you. Once you are used to the new normal pattern, your life will be trouble-free and happy.

Well, the following would be some productive ways to ease your life and prevent odor.

Healthy and Soft Diet

Well, the tough but necessary thing is to bring a few changes in your taste buds and diet. You have to monitor your body responds to specific food items and drinks. Some people’s stomachs cannot digest hard meals or gastric items like onion and dry fruits. It is just like allergy problems, some people are allergic to nuts, chocolates, or meat. Thus, you should know about your digestive system.

However, after the ostomy, you should avoid hard to digest meals like meat. You should avoid high fiber foods. It can cause gas and odor. No doubt, everyone’s body, and stomach have a different reaction, but we know some foods that cause gas. Therefore, it is better to not eat them like, onion, dry fruits, eggplant, red beans, pulses, cereals, meat, garlic, and potatoes. Well, to avoid gas and odor, you should eat fresh fruits, asparagus, white rice, spinach, green vegetables, fish, peer, cabbage, and milk.

The Ostomy Pouch Should Not Get Full

Well, as I said above that ostomy brings a few changes in your lifestyle and routine; thus, one of them is emptying your ostomy pouch. When a patient leaves the hospital, everything from now onwards in his/her shoulders. Thus, an ostomate should know when to empty the stoma bag. You cannot wait for it to get it full. You will have to empty it when you realize that the pouch is half-full. Moreover, you should check your ostomy bag to avoid leakage. If the bag gets full, it will leak and create an odor. Therefore, empty it regularly, four to five times a day.

Use Odor Eliminator

Well, after ostomy surgery, you should have some important appliances along with you all the time. You may need anything at any place. Therefore, you should have your bag which has all the necessary ostomy Supplies like ostomy pouch, wipes, medicated soaps, and deodorants. Sometimes, you cannot get rid of the smell even you change your diet routine and pouch. Therefore, you need a spray or medicated deodorants to avoid the odor. Thus, you should ask your doctor and use the medicated wipes and sprays. Moreover, you should clean the peristomal skin with scented wipes. It will freshen up your skin and make your peristomal healthy.

Use a Filter for Ostomy Pouch

Well, the good news for the ostomates is that you can filter out the accumulated gas from the ostomy pouch. Many stoma patients complain about the build-up of gas in the bag. It starts getting inflate and break the sealing of the pouch. Therefore, the discharge comes out of the ostomy bag and damage the peristomal skin. However, there is a filter for the ostomy pouch that can reduce the gas and restrain it from leakage and releasing the odor.

Change the Ostomy Bag’s Type

Well, many patients face the same problem even after following the above-mentioned steps. Well, in that case, you should consult your nurse and ask for a different type of bag. You should change the size and shape of the pouch. Maybe you are using the wrong one. Well, a new style can give you relief from the odor.

Maintaining Your Daily Life Post-Op

I didn’t start becoming an average golfer until I had an ostomy procedure done. As I previously mentioned in a previous article, I had to cut my swing in half after my procedure. I also had to keep my right arm closer to my side so that the ostomy supplies I was using stayed in place during my backswing. In golf, the more you can control your swing and stay on the same plane that you started on when taking the club back, the more balls you will be able to square up and hit flush off the sweet spot of the club. The pros are the pros because they can stay on the plane while taking a huge backswing. This is why they hit it so far.

Although I didn’t need my ostomy supplies for the long haul, the swing I developed while using them stuck around long after my ostomy care. Therefore, I am now what is called a “bogey golfer”. Now, most people don’t think much of someone that is a “bogey golfer” unless they’ve ever played the game of golf (which happens to be the hardest game in the world). A bogey golfer means that you were able to put the golf ball in the hole in one more shot than you’re allowed on that given hole, which is called PAR (professional average result). A bogey golfer means you’re slightly below average.

Now, anyone that shoots even PAR is said to be a really good golfer. But, by the definition, they’re really just average. And they’re especially average if they’re shooting PAR on courses that aren’t near the type of courses the professionals play on every week. And these professionals are shooting anywhere from 15 to 30 under PAR over the course of a four-day tournament. This means they are really above average, and by really I mean way above average.

The amount of feel and precision that the professional golfer must have in order to shoot such scores is out of this world. They have truly been blessed with a gift to do such things. The crazy thing is, there’s no cookie-cutter “fit” for what the best golfer looks like physically speaking.

There are golfers that are very much overweight, and there are golfers that look malnourished. Both can hit the ball the same distance and both can win the same tournament any given day.

All About Ostomy Reversals

Permanent stomas are a permanent solution, but a temporary one can be closed, and it’s pretty easy with the right surgery. If the surgeon decides it’s best to reverse this, it’s good to understand what you need to do, and some simple steps to ensure a faster recovery.

You should talk about the whole procedure with the surgeon well in advance since it’s a simple but a procedure you should definitely talk to your doctor before considering.  It doesn’t always involve a large incision to make the stoma since if a loop ileostomy was done and the surgeon is aware of reversing it, it’s usually closed by making an incision around that, and then pulling it through the opening and then reconnection them, and then closing it with sutures. This is a much smaller scare than the one that’s required to make a stoma.

The stoma can be reconnected, and the other end is inside, like with some colostomies, there is a more involved procedure, but you should regardless, talk with the surgeon to get the best solution for you.

Before the reversal, you should check to figure out the type of surgery and the preparation that’s needed. With a colostomy, many surgeons might improve their preference for some kind of bowel preparation to clean the bowel before it’s operated on.  Usually, with ileostomies, it’s not required to clean out the bowel by fasting about a day before surgery. But, if you’re going to have a much more involved surgery, you should definitely question.

This can cause a lot of diarrhea, so make sure that you take some wipes and some skin cream to protect this since of course, it gets sore if you wipe it a lot.

What about after the surgery? Well, the thing is, usually there isn’t a bunch of bowel control for a few days to a few weeks afterward, so you should definitely make sure that you’re near a toilet as much as you can.

Sometimes it takes a while to return to normal.  There is a frequent need to hit the toilet even a loss of continence after it’s reversed, so it can take a while.  If there were was another internal pouch made or the rectum removed, or if the ileum connected straight to the anus, and of course, how long you had a stoma all affect this.

Returning to this can be done with pelvic floor exercises or Kegels, which will help you regain the continence much quicker. You can do them a few times a day, almost all the time, often right in front of people without them knowing.

You should first try to pass urine, then try to stop it, and pay attention to those muscles.  You can squeeze them a few times a day to get to the right fit than they were before the reversal you can do this just about anywhere too, so it isn’t all that weird.

You will probably have to hit the toilet more often since the broken skin can happen. You might need to use protective cream, and make sure to reapply it once you’re finished. A wet wipe afterward might also be good, and better than dry toilet paper.

One thing to look for after reversal is internal swelling. If you notice that you’re getting frequent swelling or you’re vomiting, get some medical advice.  Do avoid heavy lifting for a bit, and take care of yourself after this type of surgery for the best results.

All About Ostomy Care

As an ostomy patient, you should know about the importance of your stoma health and peristomal skincare. Well, it is common for nurses to take care of their patients and ostomy. You have to be careful either you have continent ostomy or incontinent ostomy. In the case of the incontinent stoma, you will have an outer pouching system, and you have to take care of that too.

A patient needs ostomy surgery due to any of the following reasons:

  • Rectal cancer.
  • Pelvic tumor.
  • Colon cancer.
  • Injury in the small intestine or large intestine.
  • Infection on colon, ileum, or rectum.
  • Blockage in the colon or ileum.
  • Injury in the bowel.
  • Bladder cancer.
  • Wound in the anus.
  • Or any other disease in the large intestine, small intestine, or bladder.

As a result of the ostomy surgery, doctors create a round opening in the abdomen (location depends on the type of ostomy). The purpose of the artificial opening is to discharge the stool or urine. An ostomy pouch collects urine or feces. After the operation, it becomes the sensitive part of the patient. Moreover, the skin around this pit should be handled with care and love. For ostomy patients, it is necessary to look after the stoma and peristomal skin. Leakage or dryness can damage the skin and hole. Therefore, you should be vigilant regarding stoma and peristomal care and appliance you use.

Peristomal Skin Complications

An ostomate may suffer from peristomal skin complications. Therefore, they should know all about ostomy health. The following are some common skin problems: stoma stenosis, stoma necrosis, allergy, folliculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, infection, irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). It happens because of the continued discharge of the liquid. It can damage and dry the skin. A patient feels redness, itching, irritation, and in some severe cases it can turn into wounds.

Right Pouching System

An ostomate should know about the right pouching system for their stoma. If you do not know much about the types of ostomy pouches, you should ask your nurses or seek help from our articles. There are different styles and designs. If you have frequent discharge, you should use a one-piece pouching system. It will prevent leakage and keep your peristomal healthy and dry. Thus, it depends on your body condition and type of ostomy. Therefore, before selecting an appropriate pouching system, you should ask your nurse. They will suggest you the right fit for your stoma, and your skin will be healthy.

Changing, Emptying, and Cleaning

For a healthy ostomy life, you will have to change and empty your pouch. As an ostomate, you should know the right time to empty your ostomy bag. Your laziness or ignorance can leak the tool and damage the skin. Moreover, it can destroy your dress and create an odor. Thus, when the bag gets half-full, you should empty it. Apart from it, many ostomates do not change the pouch for two to three days. This is the wrong habit for stoma and peristomal health. You should change your pouching system two times a day. If you are a patient of a urostomy, then you should wear a new bag four to five times a day. Moreover, the cleaning of the stoma and peristomal is necessary. You cannot leave the importance of clean skin. Even you suffer from leakage or not, you should clean the peristomal skin with medicated wipes. Moreover, the output should touch your skin. Use medicines to balance the pH level of peristomal skin. Drink water and eat healthy foods. Use deodorant to avoid the smell of gas and feces. For any type of complication, you can visit your surgeon and seek professional assistance.

Everything You Want to Learn About Colostomy

What is Colostomy?

A colostomy is a common category of ostomy surgery. It is the surgical treatment of the colon (a part of the large intestine). The operation creates an artificial opening in the abdomen of the patient to collect the waste. The opening or hole in the belly is called a stoma. Usually, it is red and round. But, it changes its shape with the time and change in the body of the ostomate. The colostomy surgery provides a new path for the excretion of solid waste or feces. When a patient cannot discharge the stool from the natural track or colon cannot pass the feces, then there is a need for colostomy surgery.

Why Colostomy?

A colostomy will be necessary if a person’s anus will be unable to perform its job or be removed by the doctors. Usually, after a severe disease like colorectal cancer or ulcerative colitis. Sometimes, it is permanent and sometimes temporary. Well, in case of permanent it is irreversible while it is reversible for temporary ostomates. It all depends on the disease and infection. In the colostomy, a part of the colon was removed and the remaining attached to the stoma (artificial opening). It happened due to the following reasons:

  • Colon cancer.
  • Diverticulitis
  • Infection in the colon.
  • Blockage in the colon.
  • Injury in the large intestine.
  • Tumor in the large intestine.
  • Blockage in the anus.
  • Pelvic tumor.
  • Rectal cancer.

The above-mentioned could be the reason for colostomy surgery. However, whether it is reversible or not, it depends on the condition of the disease and patient. After the colostomy surgery, an ostomate will discharge the feces through an unnatural pathway (stoma an opening in the abdomen).

Types of Colostomy

The following are the types of colostomy surgery:

  1. Loop colostomy.
  2. End colostomy.
  3. Double-Barrel colostomy.

Loop Colostomy

The loop colostomy is usually a temporary and reversible procedure. It creates a large size stoma in the abdomen of the patient. It happens in emergencies like an injury in the large intestine during an accident. During this operation, doctors pull out a loop of the bowel. The one end brings to the abdomen and the other is held with an artificial tool. Finally, the surgeon sutures the bowel. They create two mouths or stomas: one for feces discharge and second for the mucus.

End Colostomy

In the end colostomy, doctors create only one stoma. They keep open one hole for the collection of stool and stitch the other end. It has created on the one end of the bowel of the patient.

Double-Barrel Colostomy

In the double-barrel colostomy, doctors bring both ends of the bowel to the outside of the belly wall. Usually, it is temporary and reversible processes. The two stomas are called a distal stoma and proximal stoma. The proximal stoma discharges the stool.

Recovery Time

Every ostomate has a different healing process and time. Therefore, there is no fixed period for recovery. Well, it also depends on temporary and permanent ostomies. Moreover, a patient’s age and disease matter a lot. When the stoma and large intestine (bowel and colon) heals, a person can live a normal life. Moreover, the methods of treatment have changed now. Now, surgeons perform this operation by primary resection and placing an internal ileoanal pouch. They use a small portion of the small intestine for the placement of the ileoanal pouch. Thus, patients take five to eight weeks for a full recovery. But, this is not an indelible mark. You may take a longer or shorter time.

Care for Colostomy Patients

Well, colostomy patients should take care of their diet plan. You cannot afford constipation or loose motion. Therefore, eat small meals and easy to digest soft foods. Moreover, you should use a good quality adhesive to avoid leakage. You should change your ostomy pouch three to four times a day.

Colorectal cancer is the Leading Cancer Death

According to resources such as the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is one of the main cancer deaths in the US. But finding out early increases your chances of survival. Almost every colon cancer will begin in the glands of the lining near your rectum and the colon area. When the doctors refer to this, they’re talking about this area. There is no singular cause for this, since nearly all of these begin as harmless polyps, which may then become cancer. If you’re over 60, have a descent in eastern Europe, consume lots of meats which are processed, experienced polyps, have cancer in other places, have bowel conditions which are inflammatory, have a past in your family or personal history in or breast cancer, you’re at risk for this type of cancer.

Usually, there are a couple of syndromes that might increase your risk levels of developing this.  Familial adenomatous polyposis, or hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, or known as lynch syndrome is usually the cause of this.  You may also want to look at what you eat.  This is associated with a low fiber, high fat diet and lots of red meat. But there are some studies that show that may not be the case.

So, what are some symptoms of this? Well, abdominal pain and tenderness in your lower section of the abdomen, blood in the stool, change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation, stools which are narrow, and unexpected weight loss are all symptoms of colorectal cancer, and you should get treated for this as soon as you can, since you never know what might happen.

Now, the best way to treat this is to see a doctor.  You can get it treated before it gets worse. Usually, you’ll get a physical exam first, and pressing into the belly area. While the doctor might feel a lump in your abdomen, it requires you to get a rectal exam to fully ensure that there is a chance for rectal cancer. If you’re at risk for colon cancer, you might get a rectal exam and it might not reveal that.

Colon Cancer can be determined with a help of occult blood test if you are getting a small amount of blood within your stole. This test may not be accurate.  You may also need to get a colonoscopy when you do get that test, so you should definitely make sure you get both. Also, a positive FOBT doesn’t mean that you necessarily have cancer.

You also might get some imaging tests to figure out, and you may also get blood tests too, including blood count for those with anemia, or liver function tests.

You may have to undergo more tests, if you are doctor confirms that you have cancer to make sure it’s not spreading. It will also help to see the current stage of that cancer. Stage 0 is the earliest, and 1 is within the inner layers of your colon. Stage 3 is it spreads through the muscle walls, then stage 3 is it’s spread the lymph nodes, then stage 5 is that it’s spread to other organs.  You can get blood tests to determine this as well.

So, what is the treatment? Usually, radiation and chemotherapy might be the first thing, and you might get a colectomy to remove the cancer cells if they’re not removed already. Usually, stage 0 can be easily removed during a colonoscopy.  For the other stages, you’ll need to have more extensive surgery.

That’s it, and you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms mentioned here.

Scientists Have Found the Anti-Cancer Trigger

Boosts from your garden can help activate your own body’s waste disposal system.

Recently, both US and Japanese scientists have discovered how to trigger the natural defenses of the body against cancer, and currently, they’re working on a drug that can boost the protection against all kinds of diseases. This is something that’s been studied for a while, and it’s been theorized that the body has a toxic waste disposal system that eliminates chemicals, and this is something that will get rid of the cancer-causing agents, such as those in cigarettes.

They have discovered that there is a protein that triggers the production of the toxic cleanup molecules, and this is known as Phase II enzymes, which neutralize the cancer-causing chemicals to improve the body’s excretion.

Substances in veggies such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and cabbage have raised the levels of this, and it’s one of the reasons why doctors do encourage a healthier diet than anything else.

This is pretty cool since they’ve found how it gets activated, sometimes with the help of these veggies. Chemicals such as sulforaphane in broccoli will release the protein called Nrf2, which switches on the production of other enzymes that eliminate the toxic waste and these cancer-causing chemicals from the body.

This evidence can be used to increase the system protection in people, and those who are planning long-term studies will help to reveal any lowered chances of cancer.  The findings are being recently published.

Carcinogens that lead to cancer cause a mutation in the material within the cell and the thing is, this is a silent, long process that can take up to a decade before it becomes a tumor. The key here, is to learn how to stop this before it begins, and they aren’t just looking for a cure, but rather a means for the body to protect itself.

This has recently been researched a step forward where there was a genetic engineering n a group of mice so they couldn’t produce the protein. The waste disposal dropped a lot, but once it was exposed to the cancer-causing chemical had many more tumors. Then, when they’re given a drug that has been known to raise the cleaning up of enzymes in this, it then reduced and showed a lessening of cancer.

This is something that is naturally a part of the body, so the altered mice couldn’t turn on this detox system if there were a bunch of tumors.

While the experiments were only done in mice, this is a common system in many animals, humans included, so by boosting this, it can naturally improve the resistance to disease in most of these cases.

While this is still being researched, it’s a good thing to know and something that a lot of people can benefit from if they do believe that there is something else here that will help them out a lot.
